Jimmy Carter, Humanitarian Icon and 39th U.S. President, Passes Away at 100

Former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100. He died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, after spending nearly two years in hospice care. Surrounded by his family, Carter’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to public service, diplomacy, and humanitarian efforts.

Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, a tenure marked by significant challenges, including the Iran hostage crisis and economic turbulence. Despite these obstacles, he achieved historic milestones such as brokering the Camp David Accords, a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. His commitment to fostering peace and global stability earned him widespread respect and, ultimately, the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

After leaving the White House, Carter embarked on an extraordinary second act in public service. Through The Carter Center, an organization he founded, he championed human rights, promoted free elections worldwide, and worked tirelessly to combat diseases like Guinea worm and malaria. Additionally, Carter’s hands-on involvement with Habitat for Humanity showcased his dedication to improving lives through grassroots efforts.

Leaders and citizens across the globe have paid heartfelt tributes to Carter's legacy. President Joe Biden hailed him as an "extraordinary leader and humanitarian," while former President Barack Obama commended his "moral clarity and compassion." International dignitaries, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, also celebrated his lifelong commitment to peace and justice.

Public memorial services will take place in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with a state funeral planned for January 9, which President Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning. Carter will be laid to rest in Plains, Georgia, alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away just over a year ago. In his memory, the Carter family has requested donations to The Carter Center to continue advancing his mission of global peace and health.
