Russia Warns West with Hypersonic Missile Strike in Ukraine Escalation

Moscow has delivered a stern warning to the West by launching its newly developed hypersonic ballistic missile, the Oreshnik ("Hazel Tree"), at a Ukrainian military facility. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the strike as a direct response to the U.S. and Britain's "reckless" actions in supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine, which Kyiv used to attack Russian territory earlier this week. Moscow claims such actions demonstrate NATO’s direct involvement in the conflict.

President Vladimir Putin revealed that the missile targeted a defense enterprise in Dnipro, home to the Pivdenmash rocket company. Russia's Defense Ministry celebrated the missile's success, touting it as the first operational deployment of this advanced technology in combat. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack as a "severe escalation," urging international condemnation of Moscow’s latest move.

Peskov argued that the missile strike underscores Russia’s capability and resolve to retaliate against Western interference. While Russia wasn't obligated to warn the U.S. about the launch, it provided a 30-minute notice. Putin also reiterated his warnings to the West, cautioning that facilitating Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil could drastically alter the nature of the conflict.

The Kremlin dismissed Ukraine's capacity to independently deploy sophisticated Western missiles, accusing NATO personnel of directly aiding Kyiv with satellite targeting and flight programming. This, according to Moscow, constitutes direct Western involvement, escalating the stakes of the war. Putin emphasized that any continued support for Ukraine's strikes would force Russia to adopt stronger retaliatory measures.

Despite the aggressive rhetoric, Moscow insisted on its readiness for dialogue. Peskov claimed Putin remains open to de-escalation talks, but accused U.S. President Joe Biden's administration of choosing the "path of escalation." As tensions rise, the Kremlin's message to Washington is clear: further Western involvement will not go unanswered.
