Tragedy Strikes Gaza: Israeli Airstrike on School Leaves Seven Dead, Including Infant

An Israeli airstrike targeted a former school in Gaza City, now serving as a shelter for displaced Palestinians, resulting in at least seven deaths and twelve injuries, as reported by the Palestinian civil emergency service. Among the deceased are a woman and her infant child. The Israeli military acknowledged the strike, stating it aimed at Hamas militants allegedly operating within the school compound, and emphasized efforts to minimize civilian casualties.

The school, located in the al-Rimal neighborhood west of Gaza City, had become a refuge for families fleeing ongoing conflict. The sudden attack has intensified concerns over the safety of civilians seeking shelter in such facilities. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) assert that the compound was being used by Hamas for military operations, a claim that Hamas denies, stating they do not position fighters in civilian areas.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of attacks on educational institutions in Gaza. In July 2024, the Khadija School in Deir al-Balah was struck, resulting in over 30 deaths, including children. The United Nations has repeatedly condemned such attacks, emphasizing that schools should be safe havens, not battlegrounds.

International reactions have been swift. The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, expressed disapproval of the strike and underscored the necessity for a ceasefire. Similarly, the Arab Parliament condemned the airstrike as a "heinous massacre" and a "flagrant violation of international law," urging immediate action to hold Israel accountable.

The Israeli military has stated it is investigating the incident. However, the recurring nature of such strikes raises critical questions about the effectiveness of measures purportedly in place to protect civilians. As the conflict continues, the international community faces mounting pressure to intervene and ensure the protection of non-combatants in Gaza.
