Biden and Trump Pledge Smooth Transition as They Meet at the White House

President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump met in the Oval Office for the first time since Trump’s recent victory, marking a pledge for a smooth transition of power in January. Biden, who withdrew from the 2024 race in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris, welcomed Trump with a handshake and warm words, setting aside years of political rivalry. Despite lingering policy differences—especially on issues like climate change, Russia, and trade—the meeting reflected a peaceful exchange of power, underscored by Biden’s belief in institutional norms.

The transition process, however, has encountered a partial stall, as Trump’s team has yet to sign agreements allowing full access to federal resources and facilities. Both leaders are expected to discuss critical foreign policy issues, including the future of U.S. support for Ukraine. Biden’s commitment to ensuring a seamless handover is aimed at emphasizing respect for the office and the importance of continuity.

Meanwhile, Trump met with House Republicans earlier in the day to celebrate the election outcome, while signs of the impending transition, like inaugural parade preparations, were visible outside the White House. The final stages of the transition hinge on the completion of formal agreements between the Biden and Trump teams, which could affect the timing of federal agency briefings and resource access.
