South Korea's Political Rollercoaster: Court Reinstates Ousted PM Han Duck-soo as Acting President Amid Ongoing Turmoil

In a dramatic turn of events, South Korea's Constitutional Court has overturned the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reinstating him as acting president. This decision comes after Han's suspension in December, following his refusal to appoint additional justices to the Constitutional Court amid a political crisis sparked by President Yoon Suk Yeol's earlier impeachment over the declaration of martial law.

The court's ruling was decisive, with seven out of eight justices voting to dismiss the impeachment. They concluded that the accusations against Han did not legally justify his removal from office, emphasizing the need for stability during these turbulent times.

Han's reinstatement replaces Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who had been serving as acting president during Han's suspension. This move is anticipated to bring a semblance of stability to South Korea's political landscape, which has been fraught with uncertainty since the dual impeachments.

The Constitutional Court has yet to rule on President Yoon's impeachment. Should the court uphold Yoon's impeachment, South Korea will be required to hold a presidential election within 60 days. Conversely, if the court rules in Yoon's favor, he will be reinstated with full presidential powers.

Han expressed gratitude for the court's decision and emphasized the importance of focusing on urgent national matters, such as global trade and economic stability. He also called for national unity, urging all political factions to work together for the country's benefit during this critical period.
