Australia is bracing for Herve Renard’s return to the Saudi Arabian coaching bench as they face off in a critical World Cup qualifier at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Thursday. Renard, who famously guided Saudi Arabia to an upset over Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, previously thwarted Australia’s hopes of direct qualification for Qatar, forcing them into a tense playoff route after a 0-0 draw in Sydney and a 1-0 loss in Saudi Arabia.
However, the Socceroos recently enjoyed some redemption when Australia’s Matildas ousted Renard’s French squad from the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals last year.
Currently, Australia holds second place in Group C, tied on five points with both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, though they lead on goal difference. With Japan five points clear at the top, Thursday’s game could be a deciding factor for automatic qualification to the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The Socceroos have found momentum under new coach Tony Popovic, who helped revive their qualifying bid with a 3-1 win over China and a 1-1 draw with Japan. Popovic’s arrival followed Graham Arnold’s resignation after a tough stretch that included a rare home defeat by Bahrain.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, seeks stability under Renard after a challenging spell with former coach Roberto Mancini. Renard’s familiarity with much of the squad and strong rapport with senior players could give the Green Falcons a boost. Known for a modest record away from home, the team may look to secure a draw before their upcoming match in Indonesia.
Australia’s defender Cameron Burgess acknowledged the challenge of preparing for Renard’s return. “They’ve got a new manager and a different way of playing,” he said. “We’re preparing for anything they might bring, but our focus is on how we can make an impact."
