Newly appointed Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledges the challenges awaiting him as he transitions from Portugal to England but says he is ready for the task. United confirmed the 39-year-old Portuguese manager’s arrival from Sporting CP earlier this month. He is set to begin his tenure on Monday under a contract lasting until June 2027.
Amorim, who succeeds the recently dismissed Erik ten Hag, capped off his Sporting career with a spirited 4-2 comeback win over Braga on Sunday. "I feel prepared for the new challenge," he told reporters after the match. "I’m not naive about the road ahead; it’s going to be very different, very difficult. But I’m at peace with my decision and excited to start tomorrow."
Highly regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, Amorim will face his first match in charge of United on November 24 against Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town. Currently, United sit 13th in the standings with 15 points from 11 matches, four points shy of Chelsea in third place. Since Ten Hag’s dismissal on October 28, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has led United to three wins and a draw across all competitions.
Reflecting on his departure from Sporting, Amorim added, "I know it will be challenging to replicate what I built here, but I’m also aware that other places bring new exposure and pressure ... It’s been an incredible adventure. I apologize for leaving mid-season, but this felt like the right time and path forward."
