Starmer and Macron Unite in Paris on Armistice Day Amid Concerns Over NATO's Future

Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, is set to join French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris for the French Armistice Day ceremony in a symbolic display of European solidarity, just days after Donald Trump’s re-election. Ukraine and defence will be key topics in private discussions between the two leaders.

Starmer’s presence marks the first time a UK leader has attended the French national commemoration since Winston Churchill in 1944. The event is expected to underscore the close ties between the UK and France, particularly as fears rise over the future of NATO under Trump’s administration.

The prime minister will fly to Paris to join French and British veterans in marking the 80th anniversary of the start of France’s liberation. Discussions between Starmer and Macron will reflect on their countries’ shared sacrifices, while concerns loom over Trump’s stance on NATO funding.

Trump’s calls for increased NATO spending and his election campaign promises regarding Ukraine have left European leaders considering future strategies. Starmer has reaffirmed the UK's commitment to defence, while also highlighting the importance of working with European allies amid shifting dynamics within the NATO alliance.
