F1 Drivers Challenge FIA’s Treatment and Call for Respectful Dialogue

Formula 1 drivers have publicly called on the FIA to treat them as adults and to respect their autonomy after Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc were penalized for swearing. In an open letter, the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) criticized FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem for what they described as patronizing language and his views on drivers' broadcasted language and dress code requirements, including jewelry and undergarments. The GPDA emphasized that swearing in high-stress moments is not meant to offend and urged the FIA to reconsider its approach.

The drivers also voiced concern over the use of fines as penalties, requesting transparency on how these funds are used. GPDA chairman Alex Wurz and directors George Russell, Sebastian Vettel, and Anastasia Fowle highlighted the need for open dialogue and collaboration to support the sport’s growth. This rare collective statement reflects the drivers' increasing frustration with what they see as excessive control and a lack of respect from the sport’s governing body.
